Plans for a third installment in the Bill & Ted franchise are still slowly winding along, and co-star Alex Winter has offered a tantalizing update on the project.
Winter, who co-starred with Keanu Reeves as the eponymous time-traveling slackers Bill and Ted, chatted with Yahoo! UK about the project and dropped some new details about the storyline. As has been hinted before, the plot will follow the duo as adults — though they’ve seemingly failed to save the world, as was prophesied in their youth.
They’ll apparently explore what happens when you have all that weight on your life...then it doesn’t happen. Plus, Winter teases there’ll be “many versions” of them in the movie, so we might get a peek at some alternate realities. At least from talking to Winter, it sounds like the writers have really found a good angle to approach this story as more than just a cash-in on the beloved late-1980s hit.

“[Bill & Ted] will be 40-something and it’s all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up. It’s really sweet and really f*****g funny. But it’s a Bill & Ted movie, that’s what it is. It’s for the fans of Bill & Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It’s not going to feel like a reboot. The conceit is really funny: what if you’re middle-aged, haven’t really grown up and you’re supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven’t?”
There’s many versions of ourselves in this movie. [It’s] answering the question: ‘What happened to these guys?’ They’re supposed to have done all this stuff, they weren’t the brightest bulbs on the tree, what happened 20 years later? To answer that question in a comedic way felt rich with possibility.”
Though it sounds like Winter is still excited to get this thing off the ground, it’s apparently still in the development phase, and there’s no telling when it might actually ramp up with a shooting schedule. Do you think this pitch will make a good sequel after waiting all this time?
