The alien conspiracy comes to a head in new footage from The X-Files season finale

It’s taken more than a decade, but The X-Files is finally getting a chance to really pay off its long-running alien conspiracy arc. Want a peek?

Ahead of the season finale on Monday night, the network has dropped a new featurette showing off some fresh footage and interviews with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. The season premiere reintroduced the alien conspiracy story (and added a twist, with humans now using alien tech on their own), and it seems they’ll be playing that story to its logical conclusion — an attempted global takeover by the Cigarette Smoking Man’s shady cabal.

The new trailer shows off the apparent effects of this attack, which come (at least partially) in the form of a sickness that is taking out humans left and right (the stars joke Mulder and Scully are next, but we somehow doubt it). If you’ve been waiting all these years for The X-Files to double down on all its alien mystery promises, this looks like the hour of television we’ve all been waiting for. No pressure, guys.

Of course, this is being billed as a “season” finale, and there remains a chance we could get even more X-Files next year — which makes us wonder just how much Carter & Co. will actually try to wrap up in this final hour. It’s not The X-Files if there aren’t some frustrating plot threads left dangling, right?

The X-Files airs Monday nights on Fox.
