Alien: Covenant is, as you may have heard, a prequel, taking place before the original film, but after Prometheus, Ridley Scott's 2012 film about a spaceship crew that went looking for answers about humanity's creation, and instead found a deadly pathogen that killed almost everyone on board. That film still gets mixed reviews from fans of the franchise, but Covenant will definitely be tied to it in many ways. Despite those ties, though, the film's trailers haven't really shown us much of that connection, apart from android characters both played by Michael Fassbender.

We did already know that David, Prometheus' sinister android, has a role to play, and we also know that we will be seeing the Engineer planet David and Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) were heading to at the end of that film. Now, we get to see a little more of the connective tissue between the films, thanks to a new prologue scene titled "The Crossing."

The short takes place on the same Engineer vessel Shaw and David left on, and depicts how the two get along on their journey to search for the secrets of the Engineers. It turns out they're quite amicable, despite David being responsible for both the death of Shaw's boyfriend and the hideous alien creature that gestated in her stomach. Shaw puts David back together, and David activates one of the Engineer's cryo pods for her, so she can sleep away the long interplanetary voyage. Then it becomes clear that David is, as usual, up to something. Check it out:

So yes, that's the Engineer homeworld, and yes, those are the same cylinders from Prometheus. Which means David is about to wipe the Engineers out with the black liquid they attempted to harness. That leaves the evil android with plenty of time on the planet alone before the Covenant crew shows up. Plenty of time to study, and plan, and create something awful...

Alien: Covenant arrives May 19.
