All the genre TV and movies coming to Netflix, Amazon and Hulu in April 2019

The Silence Netflix

From zombie horror to comedy takes on the superhero world, there's a whole lot to stream on the three major services this April. So settle in and get ready to update your queue.

Netflix is leading the charge with some buzzy originals and a whole lot of great sci-fi flicks fans should love. The Z Nation prequel series Black Summer goes live in April, focusing on a more terrifying corner of the zombie apocalypse. Netflix also has a fresh batch of episodes from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The Bird Box and A Quiet Place-esque film The Silence is also dropping during the month. Looking to the film lineup, you can dig on Evolution, Freddy vs. Jason, I Am Legend, and The Fifth Element.

Hulu is looking to tingle some spines with the latest episode of the horror anthology Into the Dark, along with the horror hit A Quiet Place and the fifth season of The Last Ship. Hulu is also beefing up its film lineup with The Shining and Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine. Amazon Prime is also adding A Quiet Place, along with the full trilogy of Blade films. The big story for Amazon is Season 2 of the original series The Tick, and the latest season of AMC’s sci-fi series Humans is also going live in April.

Check out our full rundown below and let us know what you’ll be bingeing.

NETFLIX

HIGHLIGHTS

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina: Part 2 (Netflix Original): The supernatural teen drama returns with a fresh batch of bewitching episodes. Season 1 proved to be a compelling tale of intrigue and freakiness. Look for more of the same here.

Black Summer (Netflix Original Series): Set in the early days of the zombie apocalypse of SYFY’s Z Nation, Black Summer hangs up the humor for some straight-up horror. With The Walking Dead wrapping its season, this could be a nice palate cleanser if you’re still looking for some undead scares.

The Silence (Netflix Film): With A Quiet Place and Bird Box becoming solid hits, the sensory horror genre is ready to mine. Enter Netflix’s The Silence, which looks to feature elements from both those hits to put together something (hopefully) clever and unique. To be clear, it’s not a cash-in on the genre, as the film is actually based on a 2015 novel.

HULU

HIGHLIGHTS

Into The Dark: I’m Just F*cking With You: Episode 7 Premiere (Hulu Original): We are in the midst of an anthology zeitgeist, with Black Mirror a hit and CBS All Access' The Twilight Zone reboot looking to be a hit. Don’t sleep on Hulu’s franchise, though, which is telling some wild and creepy stories all its own.

A Quiet Place: If you’ve been jonesing to revisit John Krasinski’s tense thriller at home, there’s never been a better time. It’s great, and there’s a reason it became a monster hit. So crank up the volume (haha) and enjoy.

The Last Ship: Season 5 Premiere (TNT): The final season of TNT’s post-apocalypse action thriller series comes to Hulu, making it the perfect time to see how the adventure ends. It's patriotic, action-packed, and a surprisingly nuanced take on the downfall (and rebuilding) of civilization.

AMAZON PRIME

HIGHLIGHTS

A Quiet Place: If Hulu’s not your jam, A Quiet Place is also landing on Amazon Prime.

Blade (Trilogy): All threel Blade films come to Amazon this month, making for a daywalking triple feature that's hard to turn down. While we wait to find out what Marvel might do with the character in the MCU, these films still hold up surprisingly well. Plus, Blade: Trinity features a pre-Deadpool Ryan Reynolds kicking around the darker side of the Marvel Universe years before he was the Merc With a Mouth.

The Tick Season 2: Spoooooon! The Tick is back for a whole new set of adventures. The first season did a whole lot of heavy lifting, introducing viewers to a strange world full of weird superheroes. Heading into Season 2, it looks to have finally found the right mix of drama and comedy. Here’s hoping it's better than ever.
