There aren't a ton of splashy originals (though Netflix is dropping a few mid-tier releases), but there will still be plenty of great sci-fi and fantasy fare to check out on the Big Three streaming services in May.

Netflix is set to drop the first season of the new sci-fi series The Rain, a high-concept Danish import set after a deadly rain has pretty much ended the world. The show is picking up quite a bit of buzz, and could be a great spiritual companion piece for fans of Stranger Things and Dark. There's also the post-apocalyptic thriller Cargo, starring Martin Freeman. The streaming service also has the latest batch of episodes of Guillermo del Toro's Trollhunters.

Hulu isn't heavy on originals this month, but makes up for it with some great film series and one of the best sci-fi shows you're probably not watching. The service is getting a ton of Nightmare on Elm Street films, plus the full Matrix trilogy. SYFY's twisty original 12 Monkeys also comes to Hulu for its third season, which was a fantastically clever run of episodes. Well worth a weekend binge.

Amazon has a few interesting film pick-ups, including Steven Spielberg's ambitious mixed bag A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The streaming service also snags the fifth and final season of BBC America's fantastic Orphan Black, which brings the clone saga to a thrilling and satisfying end.

Check out our full rundown of sci-fi TV and movies below, then let us know what you'll be streaming.

The Rain ( Season 1): This imported original picks up six years after a deadly virus has wiped out most of the population. The visuals look stunning, and critics have raved about the project. Fresh off Dark, it could be yet another genre-related import hit for Netflix.

Cargo: A fresh spin on the zombie genre, this Martin Freeman vehicle follows an infected father desperately trying to find a safe place for his infant child. Think The Road meets 28 Days Later, with a fatherly tale tying it all together.

Trollhunters (Part 3): Guillermo del Toro's twist-filled animated series returns with another batch of episodes, following a young man tasked with protecting good trolls with a super-powered amulet. The show is a big, smart fantasy adventure — and the next run of episodes could be the best yet.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (Series): If you've been jonesing to take a deep dive back into the world of Freddy Krueger, Hulu is the new home for horror. The service is picking up a murderer's row of Nightmare films, so come for Dream Warriors but stay for New Nightmare.

The Matrix (Trilogy): There had never been anything like The Matrix when it dropped, and to this day, the sci-fi trilogy is one of the most insane and ambitious things ever put to screen. With word of a revival in the air, its the perfect time to get reacquainted with Neo and the gang.

12 Monkeys (Season 3): This SYFY series is one of the best shows you might not be watching. It's dense, brilliant, and perfect for bingeing. It takes the idea of the original film as a jumping-off point and builds out a world filled with a fascinating roster of characters and mind-bending visuals. The excellent third season is loaded with twists and reveals.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence: Spielberg's immensely ambitious science fiction film hits Amazon. It is both a testament to the time surrounding its release in 2001 and a peek at how we viewed the future and the concept of AI almost two decades ago.

Orphan Black (Season 5): The final season of BBC America's cloning drama landed its story perfectly by bringing it all back to where it began. The show is great, but if nothing else dig in for the tour de force for star Tatiana Maslany. She plays pretty much everyone.
