All the sci-fi TV and movies hitting Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime in December 2017

The big story this month on streaming belongs to Netflix and Will Smith as the streaming service drops its high-profile fantasy action flick Bright

If you're unfamiliar, Bright stars Smith as a cop in a world where magic has blended with the modern age, working alongside orcs trying to stop a magical weapon that could cause a citywide catastrophe. The early trailers look positively stellar, and Netflix landed the project ahead of several other interested studios.

Along with Bright, Netflix will be debuting the new thriller Dark and a new season of Guillermo del Toro's Trollhunters. The rest of the originals slate is a bit bare on other services this month, but there are still some highlights. Hulu has the first season of Legion and cult hit Space Jam, while Amazon Prime has Gremlins 2: The New Batch, as well as the highly underrated sci-fi series Humans.

Check out all our picks below and let us know what you'll be watching.

Netflix

Highlights

Dark: Season 1 (Netflix Original)

This German import is being touted as a potential Stranger Things surrogate to fill the emotional void while fans wait for Season 3, and focuses on its own young cast and a few big mysteries in a small town. The story is framed around a missing child and the families roped into the frantic search to find them. It's dark and moody, and could be Netflix's next big hit.

Trollhunters: Part 2 (Netflix Original)

Guillermo del Toro's cult hit animated series returns with a new run of episodes, picking up the story of a young man tasked with protecting good trolls and battling evil ones. Del Toro is looking to grow this franchise with some spinoffs next year, so this next batch of episodes could start setting the stage for what's to come. Regardless, the show is a family-friendly adventure that doesn't pull its emotional punches. A worthy addition to del Toro's resume.

Bright (Netflix Original)

One of Netflix's biggest original films to date, the sci-fi action flick Bright centers on a cop (Will Smith) who partners with an orc to try and keep peace in a modern world infused with magic. The streaming service won a bidding war for the project, and all the early footage promises a big-budget blockbuster approach that's aiming to put Netflix on the map as not just a prestige TV provider, but a AAA film studio as well.

Hulu

Highlights

Agent Carter (Seasons 1-2)

Marvel's beloved, short-lived Agent Carter has landed on Hulu, in case you missed the original run. Or if you just want to relive the period-set spy-fi magic. The show debuted to critical acclaim on ABC, but low ratings doomed it after just two short seasons.

P2 (2007)

This 2007 horror thriller largely flew under the radar, but if you're looking for a deep cut to get your spine-tingling for the holidays, it should do the trick. The film stars Rachel Nichols (Continuum) as a young woman kidnapped on Christmas Eve and held captive by a deranged security guard. It's not going to break new ground in the horror genre, but it's still a taut thriller well worth an hour and a half of your time.

Space Jam (1996)

The live-action/animated hybrid hit beloved by a generation comes to streaming, as Michael Jordan teams up with Bugs Bunny and the Toon Squad to battle it out with evil aliens intent on enslaving the fan-favorite cartoon characters. Their chosen battlefield: the basketball court, naturally.

Legion: Complete Season 1 (FX)

FX's acclaimed X-Men-related spinoff comes to Hulu with its entire first season, which is a mind-bending drama that drew critical acclaim when it debuted earlier this year. The show is twisty, smart, and visually stunning — which isn't much of a surprise, considering it comes from Fargo mastermind Noah Hawley. If you missed it on the first go-round, or just want to get a refresher before Season 2, this eight-episode run is well worth a binge.

Amazon Prime

Highlights

Gremlins 2: The New Batch

If you're in the mood for a throwback 1980s genre classic, you could do far worse than Joe Dante's Gremlins sequel. The film is a big, scary action-comedy adventure that's a whole lot wackier than the original film in all the best ways. He got a bigger budget, creative freedom, and the ability to do pretty much anything. It's Dante, arguably, at his best.

Planet Hulk

Thor: Ragnarok pulled quite a few elements from the Planet Hulk comic arc, but if you want to see a more accurate representation of the story (without actually reading the comic), you can dig into this 2010 animated original. Since we have a bit of a wait until Marvel Studios drops any more live-action blockbusters, might as well check out this mostly forgotten gem in the meantime. It's worth it for the Beta Ray Bill action alone.

Humans

This AMC sci-fi series about artificial intelligence is one of the best shows you're probably not watching, asking big questions about humanity, technology, and what it means to be human. The show is ambitious and smart, and the perfect candidate for a holiday binge.
