All the sci-fi TV and movies coming to streaming in December 2020

By Trent Moore
The Midnight Sky

It's the holiday season, and there's plenty of awesome stuff to watch on streaming — even outside all the usual Santa-centric fare you might expect. From space adventures to Pixar's latest, let's dig in.

Amazon Prime is bringing the fifth (and penultimate) season of The Expanse, which finds a massive threat headed toward Earth and a whole bunch of space exploring drama. Disney Plus is continuing to roll out more episodes of The Mandalorian, plus the buzzy new Pixar flick Soul. Netflix, not to be outdone, is also dropping its high-concept sci-fi film The Midnight Sky, from George Clooney. The OG streamer is also adding the full run of Stargate SG-1 for your bingeing pleasure.

HBO Max arguably has the biggest surprise of any service, with the debut of new DC flick Wonder Woman 1984, which is being simultaneously released in theaters and on the streamer. Hulu has its new Hardy Boys mystery, along with the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the creepy thriller Rent-A-Pal (starring Trek alum Wil Wheaton). CBS All Access has its high-concept adaptation of The Stand, plus new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery.

And that's not even mentioning what's coming to Peacock, Shudder and the rest! Let's dig in.

DISNEY PLUS

HIGHLIGHTS

Soul: Pixar's next big film is skipping theaters and heading straight to Disney+ as an exclusive original film. Unlike Mulan, it'll be available for all subscribers with no additional fee. So, Merry Christmas! The film carries some spiritual connections to fellow Pixar hit Inside Out, and follows a music teacher (Jamie Foxx) who suffers an accident, and has to team up with an entity voiced by Tina Fey to try and return his soul to his body.

The Mandalorian: The second season of the live-action Star Wars series continues its rollout into December, with Mando and The Child on the search for the remaining Jedi still scattered around the galaxy. Season 2 has been action-packed and looks to keep on rocking toward Christmas.

NETFLIX

HIGHLIGHTS

The Midnight Sky: The streamer is taking one of its biggest original sci-fi swings this month with Midnight Sky, an epic space tale starring George Clooney and Felicity Jones. The story follows a scientist who is racing to help stop a team of astronauts from returning to Earth due to a global catastrophe. The film is directed by Clooney and based on Lily Brooks-Dalton's acclaimed novel Good Morning, Midnight.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Season 4: The final batch of episodes for the teen-centric horror series finally arrives, bringing some of the most ambitious (and yeah, chilling) storylines to date. It's a shame to see the series go, but it certainly looks like it'll go out with a bang, some blood, and plenty of scares.

Stargate SG-1 (Complete Series): It's bounced around other services in recent years, but now the long-running Stargate SG-1 series is hitting Netflix. If you're looking to revisit the sci-fi adventure (it makes for some mighty fine, world-saving comfort food), or discover it for the first time — there's never a bad time to step through the ‘gate.

HULU

HIGHLIGHTS

The Hardy Boys: Hulu is getting in on the Nancy Drew-esque action with a Hardy Boys slant with this fresh adaptation. It'll follow the young sleuths as they dig into the tragedy that changed their loves. Expect lots of sinister secrets along the way.

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy: All these years later, and Peter Jackson's OG Middle-earth trilogy remains one of the greatest fantasy adventures ever put to film. And now? You can stream it all, conveniently, in one place in its entirety.

Rent-A-Pal: This freaky thriller, starring Star Trek fan favorite Will Wheaton, is set in 1990 and follows a lonely man who tries to "rent" a friend through a VHS tape service. It only gets a whole lot weirder and more terrifying from there.

AMAZON PRIME

HIGHLIGHTS

The Expanse (Season 5): One of the greatest sci-fi shows in modern history returns with a brand new batch of episodes. The Ring is open, there are worlds to explore, and humanity is still as fractured and screwed up as ever. Oh, and did we mention there's an attack headed for Earth? Thankfully, the creative team has plenty of time left to work out the rest of the drama, as the show has already been renewed for a sixth and final season.

HIGHLIGHTS

Falling Skies (Complete Series): It's been a long time since this fan favorite sci-fi series, about the remnants of humanity fighting back in an alien-occupied world, has been available on streaming. But it's finally back in action and easy to find. The show ran on TNT from 2011-2015, and starred Noah Wyle and Moon Bloodgood as survivors trying to keep their friends and families alive.

Wonder Woman 1984: Due to the pandemic, one of the biggest movies of 2020 is coming straight to HBO Max — and it'll make for one heck of a good Christmas gift. After being delayed a couple of times, the eagerly anticipated Wonder Woman sequel will have a simultaneous HBO Max and theatrical release (where theaters are still open at this point). The film brings back Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, and introduces Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal to this stunning corner of the DC Universe.

PEACOCK

HIGHLIGHTS

Tremors Film Series: Looking for a little horror and comedy to keep you busy? Peacock is digging deep with several episodes in the Tremors film series, about a group of ragtag heroes who take on underground monsters dubbed Graboids. From its humble small town desert roots, the franchise has expanded out to everywhere from the jungles to the arctic in subsequent sequels. So there's plenty to keep the concept fresh.

Limetown Season 1: The acclaimed original series that first debuted on Facebook Watch makes the jump to Peacock, based on the podcast of the same name, about a journalist looking into a rash of disappearances at a research facility. The series stars Jessica Biel and Stanley Tucci.

The Skulls: This is Peak 2000 in all the best ways. It stars Joshua Jackson, Paul Walker and Leslie Bibb, and digs into a secret society conspiracy. Jackson's character is a "townie" who gets in way too deep in the secret society known as "The Skulls." Critics absolutely savaged the film, though for fans of the era and the age, holds a certain cult appeal.
