All the sci-fi TV and movies streaming in August 2021: From Star Trek to The Suicide Squad

By Trent Moore
The Suicide Squad

Summer movie season continues, and like much of 2021 up to this point, a whole lot of that blockbuster action is playing out in streaming during August.

The big story is The Suicide Squad, the James Gunn comic book romp that finds the Guardians of the Galaxy director playing around in the DC sandbox. That will hit HBO Max, alongside the new Westworld-y Hugh Jackman flick Reminiscence. Netflix also has a few big projects, led by The Witcher animated film prequel.

At Disney+, Marvel’s What If? series makes its debut, telling all kinds of weird and wild stories from the untold corners of the MCU multiverse. There’s also the Star Wars: The Bad Batch finale, and a behind-the-scenes Star Wars episode looking into that surprise-filled The Mandalorian Season 2 finale. Peacock has Season 2 of The Departure, plus plenty of A-list movies hitting its catalog.

Paramount Plus has new episodes of Star Trek: Lower Decks and Evil, while Apple TV+ brings us a new season of the Jason Momoa-led sci-fi epic SEE. Check out our full rundown below and let us know what you’ll be streaming.

NETFLIX

HIGHLIGHTS

Vivo: This Sony Pictures Animation flick was originally set for a theatrical release, but is now headed to Netflix. The film is a musical, with tunes put together by Hamilton legend Lin-Manuel Miranda (he also voices the film’s star). The rest of the A-list cast includes Zoe Saldana, Micheal Rooker, and Gloria Estefan.

Brand New Cherry Flavor: A big, wild horror miniseries about a filmmaker in the 1990s who tries to make a movie and ends up tumbling down “a hallucinatory rabbit hole of sex, magic, revenge — and kittens.” It stars Rosa Salazar, Eric Lange, and Catherine Keener.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf: While we wait for The Witcher’s proper return in live action, this animated prequel should keep us plenty entertained. The plot finds Vesermir escaping from poverty to become a witcher, starting a new life to slay monsters for coin and glory.

DISNEY PLUS

HIGHLIGHTS

Marvel’s What If…?: The next big Marvel project on Disney+ is animated, but fresh off Loki, this looks to be our first deep dive into the multiverse. The show is what it sounds like, the scripted equivalent of the popular “What If?” comic concept, with one-off stories about alternate reality versions of heroes and stories.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch Finale: The revival of the beloved Star Wars animated series wraps up its run this month, carving the latest chapter in the extended Star Wars universe that will be rolling out for years to come on streaming.

Disney Gallery: Star Wars: The Mandalorian: The popular behind the scenes series takes a fresh look back at the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian, which included one heck of a major cameo surprise. Wanna see how it came together? This should do the trick.

HBO MAX

HIGHLIGHTS

The Suicide Squad: The wait is finally over. James Gunn’s big ol’ experiment in the DC Comics sandbox finally arrives as part of the dual streaming/theatrical rollout from Warner Bros. Though this will be streaming, it might be worth it to see this team of anti-heroes save the world on the big screen.

Titans (Season 3 Premiere): The cult hit DC Comics series that started life on the now-defunct DC Universe streaming service has jumped to HBO Max, and the third season will mark the first on the larger service. This season looks to dig deeper than ever into the Batman mythos, and could definitely make for a great binge catch-up for fans that haven’t caught the show yet.

Reminiscence: Another dual streaming/theatrical rollout, this looks to be one of the most interesting original sci-fi films of the year, with one heck of a pedigree behind and in front of the camera. The film stars Hugh Jackman as a detective of the mind, living in a near-future where global warming has put the city of Miami largely underwater. It also marks Westworld alum Lisa Joy’s big screen directorial debut, so you know it’ll have plenty of Westworld-y twists.

Archer: Season 12 Premiere (FXX): Danger zone! The animated spy-fi series Archer returns with a new season, after sending up everything from Indiana Jones, Alien, and James Bond over the past decade or so. The show remains as fun as ever, all these years later.
