All the sci-fi TV and movies streaming in June 2021

By Trent Moore
Loki Disney Plus

If you’re looking for a new favorite show to get into this summer, there are plenty of options on streaming this month. From bizzaro genre adaptations to the next Marvel blockbuster, let’s dig in.

The biggest story is arguably on Disney+, where the new Marvel series Loki will be kicking off. The project marks the third MCU series to hit the service this year, following WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. This one looks to be a bit more in that weird and wild wheelhouse of WandaVision, tracking Loki as he’s tasked with fixing all the trouble he’s caused in the time stream. The streamer also has the new Pixar film Luca making its premiere, along with the new original series The Mysterious Benedict Society.

On Netflix, the live-action adaptation of DC Comics’ Sweet Tooth is set to drop, and it could be one of the wildest shows of the summer. The fantasy adventure comic was created by Jeff Lemire and follows a fantastical journey across the country. The service also has Season 2 of zombie thriller Black Summer, in case you need some more white-knuckle undead action.

HBO Max has its latest blockbuster film with The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It making its dual streaming/theatrical premiere, plus several major movies such as the full Harry Potter film series. Hulu also has a ton of good movies, including '90s sci-fi classic Face/Off and cult hit Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. At Peacock, there are plenty of great movies, plus a wild drop of recent SYFY adult animated series.

Check out the full rundown below and let us know what you’ll be streaming.

HIGHLIGHTS

Sweet Tooth: Based on the beloved DC Comics series and executive produced by Susan Downey and Robert Downey Jr., Sweet Tooth is a post-apocalyptic fairytale about a hybrid deer-boy and a wandering loner who embark on an extraordinary adventure.

Black Summer (Season 2): The zombie apocalypse thriller returns. Winter comes with cold-blooded new challenges during the zombie apocalypse as frantic scavengers and violent militias battle the dead and desperate.

DISNEY+

HIGHLIGHTS

Loki (Series Premiere): Everyone’s favorite trickster god is getting his own series as Tom Hiddleston reprises his iconic Marvel role as Loki in a new sci-fi series that finds his skipping across space and time to try and set right all the chaos he caused by breaking the timeline in Avengers: Endgame.

Luca: Pixar’s next project is headed straight to streaming. The film, set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta, and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface.

The Mysterious Benedict Society: Based on the popular book series, this mystery series looks kind of like a more family-friendly spin on The Umbrella Academy meets a Wes Anderson aesthetic. Yeah, it’s an interesting vibe — but could definitely turn into our new favorite series this summer.

HULU

HIGHLIGHTS

Face/Off: With rumblings of a revival, reboot, sequel or something in the works — there’s no better time to go back to the classic sci-fi action flick. It’s a true '90s classic, starring Nic Cage and John Travolta, and it only gets better with time.

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters: This mid-budget, R-rated fantasy flick is such a bizarre anomaly that it feels like it shouldn’t even exist. But it does, and it’s so darn fun. It stars Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton and Famke Janssen in a bloody, monster-filled fantasy world that is a true romp. If you missed it the first time around, or simply haven’t seen it in a few years, dig in.

HIGHLIGHTS

SYFY Animated Series: If you happen o have missed the past few months on animated series on SYFY (first of all, why’d you do that?!), don’t worry, because the line-up is headed to Peacock. One highlight is Devil May Care, featuring the voice work of Resident Alien star Alan Tudyk as the devil just looking to improve his social media image in hell.

The Matrix (Trilogy): A fourth Matrix film is finally coming later this year, so there’s no better time to catch up on the original trilogy with a nice binge session. Sure, that black leather hasn’t aged entirely well, but the action and effects still look pretty cool all these years later.

Intelligence Season 2: This original comedy series returns for its second season, following an NSA agent assigned to work as a liaison with a cyber crimes unit.
