American Flagg!, the weirdly prescient 1980s comic book from Howard Chaykin, has just been optioned by Luc Besson's EuropaCorp to develop the book for television.

Set in the year 2031, American Flagg! takes place in a world in crisis. After a number of worldwide disasters, the American government as well has the heads of major corporations have fled Earth to settle on Mars, and Russia has collapsed, leaving the Brazilian Union of the Americas and Pan-African Legion as the new world superpowers. The Plex, an interplanetary union of governments and corporations, runs the United States from Mars, but it is all part of a secret plot to sell off the assets of the United States to the other world powers.

Reuben Flagg is a former television star who is naively recruited by the Tricentennial Recovery Committee. He soon discovers the ongoing corruption and fascism going on in the Plex, and he uses his powers to set things right.

The project is currently out to writers and directors, with Chaykin aboard to executive produce.
