American Gods is trying hard to right the ship. After losing showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green due to budgetary and creative differences, Kristin Chenoweth said she was unsure if she will be returning in the role of old god Easter, and Gillian Anderson has already confirmed that she will not be returning as new god Media.
Now TV Line is reporting that rather than casting a new actress to play Media, the show is going with a slightly newer version of the character. The character will be called New Media, and she will be the god of social media.
An actress has not been cast yet, but the show is said to be looking for a 20-something Asian woman to play the role. Since Neil Gaiman wrote the book American Gods in 2001, there was no Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, or even MySpace in the source material. New Media would be a wholly new creation just for Season 2 of the Starz series.
Gillian Anderson's Media represented television and movie worship. As such, she appeared in Season 1 as a number of pop culture icons, including David Bowie, Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball, and Judy Garland. Alas, she announced that she would not return to the show after Fuller left. (Anderson also worked with Fuller on his NBC series, Hannibal.)
American Gods has landed a new showrunner, and it is someone that Fuller knows. Jesse Alexander will take over in Season 2. He worked with Fuller and Anderson on Hannibal, and also worked on Star Trek: Discovery (another show that Fuller worked on before he left, ironically, for American Gods).
Production on Season 2 of American Gods is supposed to start in May. What do you think of this New Media god?
