American Horror Story is always bringing something new to the table. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s scary, and other times it’s downright weird. The new teaser trailer for season 8, entitled American Horror Story: Apocalypse has vibes of those last two item in spades.

The title, revealed at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, is not taking itself lightly. Using an hourglass as a focal point, the one-minute trailer gives fans multiple images of how the world can be decimated. Nuclear bombs, biochemical warfare, and even the supernatural show up and lay waste to the planet. Many questions arise from such a short trailer. What causes this “apocalypse”? Is it literal or figurative? Besides Murder House, what other seasons will crossover?

We won’t have to wait long as the premiere is less than a month out. Returning will be mainstays Sarah Paulson (playing three different characters), Evan Peters, and Kathy Bates. Jessica Lange will reprise her Murder House character, Constance Langdon. This will also mark the series’ directorial debuts of Paulson and Peters.

Throughout its eight seasons, American Horror Story has thrived on surprising its fans and seeing how far it can go. Apocalypse looks to be on that same path.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse will premiere on FX September 12th.
