One of the longest-running sci-fi franchises in history just got its own streaming service — and it’s actually not a terrible deal. Assuming you’re really into Stargate, of course.

MGM Studios has launched Stargate Command, a new online steaming service that’s built entirely around the Stargate franchise. It includes the original 1994 Stargate film; all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1; all five seasons of Stargate Atlantis; the two SG-1 straight-to-DVD movies; and the two seasons of Stargate Universe. Along with all the shows and movies, you also get access to the upcoming prequel web series Stargate Origins, plus some behind-the-scenes goodies from across the franchise.

The service costs a one-time fee of $20, which isn’t all that bad considering you get enough material to keep you bingeing for months, not to mention additional behind-the-scenes material and the new spinoff series. Which, yeah, the prequel show sounds like it’ll be on the low-budget side of the spectrum. But still, it’s new Stargate, and there’s certainly an audience for it. Sadly, the all-access pass does not include a resolution to Stargate Universe’s excellent season finale cliffhanger. Le sigh.

It’ll be interesting to see what MGM will do with the franchise long-term, beyond the prequel web series and streaming portal of older material. It’s encouraging to see the studio still showing love for the ‘Gate and trying to keep it relevant, but it’s only a matter of time until we get a splashy reboot or revival, right? Original co-creator Dean Devlin’s proposed film reboot hit the skids after Independence Day: Resurgence underperformed at the box office, and MGM seems to still be in a holding pattern in regard to the franchise’s future.

But this is a franchise with a fervent and recently underserved fan base. Just be patient — and enjoy a treasure trove of classic adventures in the meantime.
