When we hear “comic book turned into a television show,” the first thing that comes to mind is “Marvel” or “DC.” But we’re pleased to say that the Big Two aren’t a part of this announcement: Wynonna Earp, from IDW Publishing, is coming to Syfy.
For those of you who haven’t read the series, female protagonist Earp, who is the descendant of Old West lawman Wyatt Earp, is a special agent for an even more special team within the U.S. Marshals. Instead of battling outlaws at the O.K. Corral, this Earp fights mummies, vampires and zombies for the Monster Squad.
According to the press release, “Wynonna is a witty and wild modern day gunslinger, using her unique abilities and a dysfunctional posse of allies to bring the paranormal to justice… Melanie Scrofano (Damien, Gangland Undercover) will star as Wynonna Earp. Tim Rozon (Being Human, Instant Star) will play legendary con artist Doc Holliday, and Shamier Anderson (Defiance, Constantine) plays the mysterious Agent Dolls.”
Syfy has ordered 13 one-hour episodes. The show, produced by Seven24 Films, will be filmed in Calgary. Wynonna Earp is scheduled to air April 2016.
IDW published 30 Days of Night, which was turned into a movie in 2007. It also publishes comics based on existing properties, such as Shaun of the Dead, Metal Gear Solid, Angel and Underworld.
