It's a reunion of epic proportions.
Andy Serkis will moderate Peter Jackson's Mortal Engines panel at New York Comic Con next month, bringing the Oscar-winning filmmaker together again with one of his most precious collaborators from The Lord of the Rings trilogy and his 2005 remake of King Kong.
According to Deadline, which broke the news, the actor-turned-director will join Jackson onstage with the latter's scripting partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens and Mortal Engines helmer Christian Rivers, Jackson's longtime storyboard artist who's making his feature debut on the film.
Anyone who's followed the Rings ringmaster's behind-the-scenes updates from the set of LOTR, King Kong, and The Hobbit has witnessed Serkis' rise from a master mo-cap performer giving iconic performances as Gollum and Kong to a director in his own right. Under Jackson's tutelage, Serkis served as a second unit director on the latter trilogy before going on to helm such features as last year's biographical drama Breathe and Netflix's forthcoming Jungle Book entry Mowgli.
Over their two decade working relationship, the two became close friends and Jackson said he couldn't think of anyone better to interview him and his fellow creatives given Andy's extensive knowledge of WETA Digital's world-building process.
"I’ve always found the moderators of these panels to be very good when I’ve been part of them at Comic Con, but we just thought it would give it a slightly different vibe if it was someone in the family. Andy knows me and Christian and Philippa and Fran very well," Jackson told Deadline.
"He’s not involved in the film, so the movie’s fresh for him, but he understands the process, and how we make these films. We thought his questions might be more focused on his understanding of how we do things, rather than a moderator who comes in cold and doesn’t know a thing."
One moderator to rule them all indeed.
Added Serkis: "To be reunited with my dear friends and long standing collaborators, Peter, Fran, Philippa and Christian, to celebrate the arrival of their feverishly anticipated, behemoth piece of character driven, world building magic... is beyond thrilling."
Joining Jackson and pals on the highly anticipated panel will also be Mortal Engines stars Hera Hilmar, Hugo Weaving, Robbie Sheehan, Stephen Lang, Leila George, and Jihae. The event will offer the first extended sneak peek of the post apocalyptic steampunk adventure based on Philip Reeve's novel with a screening of the movie's first eight minutes.
Mortal Engines hits theaters on Dec. 14.
