Andy Serkis, the world's most famous motion capture performer, is taking his love of that particular form of acting into another realm: Your living room.

Serkis and his performance capture studio The Imaginarium have partnered with "mixed reality" company Magic Leap to create a new augmented reality experience that will feature Serkis creating a brand-new fantasy character, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In addition to Serkis' new performance for the platform, the partnership will also include Serkis' Imaginarium creating even more content for Magic Leap, and allowing third-party developers to use the Imaginarium motion capture stage in London and other resources for their own creations.

"What is thrilling is that with Magic Leap, the relationship of the performances to the real world can change hugely and they can be placed and manifested in countless ways,” Serkis said. "The storytelling has to be compelling, robust and totally engaging, but it’s fun knowing that the characters can end up anywhere, and be related to in a myriad of different situations."

Serkis' new character, following in the footsteps of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings and Caesar from the Planet of the Apes trilogy, is Grishneck, an "Orc-like" creature whose backstory includes rejection from another project because he wasn't scary enough. Designed for the Magic Leap One goggles, Grishneck will be able to interact with users and their environment, including furniture. While Magic Leap has not yet released their product to consumers, the Creator Edition of the Magic Leap One began shipping last month at a price of $2,295. It's not yet clear when a version of Grishneck and other Imaginarium content will be available to everyone, but if you enjoy augmented reality and motion capture, this is an exciting first step.

“We now have a new way of experiencing story,” Serkis said. “It’s the next generation of theater/cinema/event that we’ve been circling around for some time, and it’s finally emerging. Entertainment is obviously the area that I’m immediately interested in, but it’s only one aspect of the phenomenal range of applications that Magic Leap will offer.”
