Fox is in the early days of figuring out how to expand its X-Men franchise beyond the flagship films and Wolverine spinoffs (Deadpool not withstanding), and now we have a crazy-early peek at the most interesting option on the table.

Coming Soon has debuted an animatic allegedly from the development of New Mutants, which shows off Magik, Wolfsbane, and Cannonball as they slug it out with the Demon Bear. Yeah, that’s right: It features the occasional New Mutants comic baddie Demon Bear, who is literally a giant, evil bear. The animatic looks to be for a potential action set piece (no word on if Demon Bear is the primary antagonist of the film, or just a bit player), and there’s obviously no guarantee any of this proposed scene will actually wind up in the final film.

The project is being directed by Josh Boone, and is being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes” horror movie. So yeah, a major departure from the typical X-Men tentpole fare. Early casting rumors indicate Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) could play Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) could play Magik, and Nat Wolff (The Fault in Our Stars) could play Cannonball.

The New Mutants film is tentatively set to open in early 2018.
