Annihilation trailer teases a dangerous world beyond 'the shimmer'

Nothing screams sci-fi like a scientist with a gun — and that’s exactly what the official trailer for Annihilation brings to the table. Director Alex Garland, who also did the phenomenal Ex Machina, returns with that film’s star, Oscar Isaac, plus Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, and Thor: Ragnarok Valkyrie Tessa Thompson to adapt Jeff VanderMeer’s book of the same name.

The trailer shows a biologist (Portman) sent into a mysterious and almost certainly ominous “shimmer” to understand the otherworldly nature on the other side, with the short-term goal of figuring out her husband’s (Isaac) illness. Look for yourself:

Terrifying critters, some seemingly hybrids of others, populate this shimmery world, and a rugged crew of women are those attempting to survive it. With Garland’s love of putting existentialism inside of genre “what ifs,” those scientists are likely in for one or two Twilight Zone twists -- likely hinged on the leader, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Nature seems to have turned against these women, but what it means for humanity seems like the overarching question to answer. Right after they avoid being eaten, of course.

The film is scheduled to be released on February 23, 2018.
