Fox's New Mutants cast is finally taking shape.

Young genre stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch, Split) have both officially signed on to join the X-Men spin-off flick, which will be directed and co-written by Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars). Both actresses have been tied to the project since last year, but now that Boone's flick has a green light and a date release, they've officially come aboard.

As was previously reported, Taylor-Joy will play Illyana Rasputin, aka Magik, a teleporting sorceress who's also the younger sister of the X-Man Colossus. Williams will play Rahne Sinclair, aka Wolfsbane, a shapeshifter who can transform into a wolf or a wolf-human hybrid. Both are core members of the original New Mutants team introduced by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod in 1982 (though Magik didn't join up until 1984).

Boone is reportedly eyeing a fairly traditional New Mutants lineup for the film, which will also include Danielle Moonstar, Sunspot, Cannonball, and Warlock (live-action Warlock will be very interesting). According to The Hollywood Reporter, the production wants "ethnically appropriate" actors to fill the roles of Danielle (who is Cheyenne) and Sunspot (who is Brazilian), which will keep diversity as a key part of the roster.

It's been almost two years to the day since news first broke that Fox was eyeing this film, and now Boone is mere months away from production. New Mutants is poised to inject lots of new blood into the X-franchise, revitalizing the new team as the old team heads for their second "Dark Phoenix Saga" adaptation. In casting Williams and Taylor-Joy, Boone gains two stars with loads of charisma and built-in fanbases, which gives him a little more pull when working out some untested concepts in the franchise. Plus, he now has more freedom to introduce new faces as some of the other characters.

New Mutants arrives April 13, 2018. What do you think of the first official casting news?
