Today is the birthday of actor Sean Maher, who portrayed Dr. Simon Tam on the short-lived and much-beloved series Firefly. Maher also recently appeared in the space thriller “Beyond the Edge” with Caspar Van Dien and Adrienne Barbeau. The actor is a continued fan favorite, a father of two, and we at Syfy Wire remain hopeful for another trip aboard Serenity.  Speaking of trips …

Here’s a weird one. It was on this day in 1943 that Dr. Albert Hofmann ingested 250 micrograms of LSD and changed sci-fi culture forever. We’re not advocating, we’re just telling you what happened. Hofmann had been experimenting with lysergic acid trying to find a drug that would help with breathing and circulation. At some point, he accidentally touched something on his face (an eye or a tongue) and then while riding his bike home, went completely down a rabbit hole. Psychedelics are said to have great influence on science fiction,  but it’s always a fine line. May we suggest that you take a look at what’s been said on the subject about both the writing of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune and the subsequent film adaptation.  Also, it’s definitely  time for a re-watch of Dune.  Pretty much any time.

Tomorrow:  Sydney Bristow, up at bat!
