How does a grieving, world-weary, potty-mouthed secret agent, who just so happens to be stuck in a coma, keep his noggin occupied while the real world waits on pause? Fly to the South Pacific and lose himself in a World War II-vintage time warp that puts him, most ineptly, in a point-man role that reminds us more than a little of Indiana Jones... without all the seriousness.
FXX just cracked open a coconut-fresh preview trailer for the upcoming ninth season of Archer, and it looks as though our man Sterling is turning his comatose but oh-so-active mind away from the noir streets of Raymond Chandler’s Los Angeles and toward the jungles of tiny Mitimotu.
What’s Mitimotu? Get used to hearing it a lot: It’s the imaginary tropical island inside Archer’s head for Season 9’s Danger Island, and it looks set to provide him with a whole new playground where staying drunk, fighting restless natives, getting the girl, and outsmarting Nazis (and the local wildlife, for that matter) all will keep his mind off the loss of Woodhouse, his butler, voiced until 2015 by the late George Coe.
The year’s 1939, World War II is on the horizon, there’s no corner of the Earth where the Germans aren’t hatching some kind of diabolical, quasi-supernaturally evil plan, and Archer is piloting seaplanes — drunkenly so. It looks like all the members of ISIS (the International Secret Intelligence Service) will be reimagined in Archer’s dream state, playing roles appropriate (or, rather, inappropriate) to the adventure.
Given infinite dream-power to carve out his own position as the protagonist, you’d think Sterling might dream up some great ability: shooting lasers from his eyes, or, failing that, at least mastering some of the real skills he manages to get by without in his waking life.
But no: “While the rest of the world is concerned about the impending Second World War,” FXX teases, “Archer is only concerned with who’s buying his next drink. Along with his trusty co-pilot Pam, Sterling must navigate quicksand, cannibals, super-intelligent monkeys, poison darts, pirates, and did we mention quicksand?”
It’s hard to believe Archer is closing in on its 10th birthday, but the trailer suggests there’re still plenty of ridiculously fun stories to be told in show creator Adam Reed’s Emmy Award-winning universe. Archer: Danger Island premieres on FXX on April 25.
