The theme of the Archie Comics panel at New York Comic Con was "Riverdale and Beyond," but it started with a look back, paying tribute to editor-in-chief Victor Gorelick, who on Saturday celebrated his 60th anniversary of working for the company. Gorelick boasted of never missing a deadline — and only missing two office parties.

The horror genre continues to be a major part of the company's output. Next up is Blossoms 666, coming in January from Cullen Bunn, with art from Laura Braga and featuring devious twins Cheryl and Jason Blossom. "The Blossoms have always been slightly evil, so we thought what if we made one of them the Antichrist," said Archie co-president Alex Segura.

In addition, two of the company's horror titles will intersect in the upcoming Jughead: The Hunger vs. Vampironica by Frank Tieri, with Pat and Tim Kennedy on art.

In (slightly) more grounded Riverdale universe Nick Spencer talked about taking over as the new writer for the flagship Archie comic (along with artist Marguerite Sauvage), starting with November's Issue #700. Taking over from the previous team of Mark Waid and Fiona Staples—who reinvented the comic with a modern sensibility — "is an impossible act to follow," Spencer said, "but we're going to do our best, building on what they did." Regarding the plot, he teased that "the whole Riverdale gang is back from summer vacation with big secrets. There are even some new romances that I'm really excited about, including one we've never seen before."

The new Betty & Veronica book, launching in December, takes place over the course of the girls' senior year of high school. "For the first time they're realizing that the future may separate them," series writer Jamie L. Rotante said, hinting that they'll have to decide whether they want to go to college together.

In response to a fan question, Segura hinted that there should be "a pretty cool announcement coming up soon" regarding a return of Josie and the Pussycats to the comics.
