Things are getting spooky in Riverdale, the town of Archie, Jughead, Veronica, Betty, Moose, Reggie, and the rest of the gang in Archie Comics. However, the publisher has plunged the town into darkness with two new titles, Jughead: The Hunger and Vampironica.
Jughead Jones, the guy with one of the biggest appetites comic books have ever seen, is now a werewolf stalking prey. Meanwhile, Veronica Lodge, Archie's rich and on-again-off-again girlfriend, has become a vampire hunting other members of the undead.
To paraphrase Melisandre from Game of Thrones, "Riverdale is dark and full of terrors." Both titles are releasing new issues in late May and early June, with The Hunger on its sixth issue and Vampironica on its third.
Jughead: The Hunger #6 was written by Frank Tieri with art by Pat and Tim Kennedy, Joe Eisma, Bob Smith, Matt Herms, and Jack Morelli.
"Jughead: The Hunger 5-7 comprises our 'Welcome Home, Jug' arc where — you guessed it— Jughead returns home to good ol’ Riverdale," Tieri said in an exclusive statement to SYFY WIRE. "Now why the hell would he do that when he’s on the run for being the 'Riverdale Ripper'? Well, let’s just say Reggie has something to do with that. The build-up between Jughead and Reggie that began way back in our initial one-shot comes to a head as Reggie targets Jug’s sister, Jellybean, forcing our favorite hamburger eater to forgo his fugitive status. And where werewolf Jughead goes, you know Werewolf Hunter Betty and the Coopers aren’t too far behind."
He added: "Not to spoil too much, but by the time this arc is done, a character will do something that changes everything about Jughead: The Hunger. And believe me, this is not hyperbole... I do mean everything.”
It will go on sale May 30, but here's the official solicit description in the meantime to satisfy your cursed craving:
The history of werewolves in the Jones family runs deep — but does that include Jughead's little sister Jellybean as well? It's a question good ol' Jug must answer before the Coopers or Reggie's new Pack get to her first!
Vampironica #3 — written by Greg and Megan Smallwood and art by Greg Smallwood and Jack Morelli — arrives on June 6 with "Veronica's search for answers leads to a deadly confrontation at Lodge Mansion."
These two books are perfect for anyone looking for more of the darker tone you'd find on CW's Riverdale TV show, mixed with the supernatural thrills of the short-lived Archie's Weird Mysteries in the late '90s and early 2000s on PAX TV.
