For today's installment of "Things We Wish We Were Cool Enough to Think Up", check out this flying Mjolnir hammer from Thor re-created by Allen Pan. Pan sums up what he does in one concise sentence: "I make pretend things into real things!" But he's up to a bit more than that when you dig a little deeper.
The electronics wiz and prolific inventor has over 435,000 subscribers to his YouTube channel and he's created everything from a fire-spewing gaunlet to a microwave gun to a real working lightsaber. Pretty much all of it should come with a "Do not try this at home" disclaimer, which makes us love it more.
One of Pan's earliest videos was of a Mjolnir he created that could only be lifted by one who was worthy (or whom he allowed to pick it up with a flip of a switch). Two years later, he's created a flying version that will fly out of and back into the hand of one who's worthy.
Or... one who's willing to try over and over and over again.
Speaking to SYFY WIRE, Pan explained, "I built an 'unliftable' Mjolnir almost exactly two years ago, and that video started my entire Youtube career. So I thought it was fitting to make another version on the anniversary that's sort of the opposite of unliftable, a flying Mjolnir! Plus Thor Ragnarok is just a kick-ass movie.".
In the end, Pan's Mjolnir is a quadcopter and a control device, which is pretty amazing when you realize what sort of budget he works with (almost non-existent) and what he could do with some real money. This Mjolnir may still be in the prototype phase, but it's not a stretch to imagine how this could be manufactured by a toy company and available to Thor wannabes everywhere. We'd certainly give it a whirl.
