[Spoilers below]

The writers behind Arrow don't pull any punches. Last night's episode was filled with jaw-dropping bombs, including an unsuspected death. Arrow's executive producer Andrew Kreisberg explains why they decided to pull the plug on a series regular.

We all watched in horror as Moira Queen (Susanna Thompson), Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Thea's (Willa Holland) mother, met her maker. Her death couldn't have come at a more inconvenient time. While on the ride home, she was about to spill a huge secret about Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) to her children before their limo was abruptly hit. Oliver woke up on the ground to find his mom and sister being held at gunpoint by psycho of the year Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett).

Oliver refused to choose between the two women, and Moira refused to let her children die. So in a last ditch effort, she sacrificed her life and was stabbed through the chest. The scene was brutal and it left us wondering: Why? Moira decided to continue her run for mayor, and hinted to Oliver that she knew he was the Arrow. Why end her story now?

Kreisberg recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and attempted to shed some light on the difficult decision."It wasn't something we were talking about last year. I don't want to give the impression that [it was like] 'Welp! Somebody has to die, let's spin the wheel. And, bad luck Moira.'"

"When we were talking about the future, knowing that it was only going to be powerful if Slade was going to change the game by doing something truly monstrous -- if Moira wins the mayorship, if she makes up with her kids, what is Moira without a giant secret?" Kreisberg said. "If they all forgive her and then there's some other giant secret, for us it felt like we were becoming a soap opera."

They decided to give Moira a hero's death, forcing her to take her last secret to the grave. But Kreisberg explains that said secret will play out sooner than we think. We've learned that Merlyn will return for the May 7 episode, "Streets of Fire," so maybe that's when it will be revealed.

And in case you forgot the other bomb of the night: Oliver's a father. They made him an absentee dad, Superman Returns-style. Several flashbacks revealed that he got a girl pregnant way before his time on the island. He told Moira about it and she paid off the mother-to-be. The young woman lied to Oliver and claimed that she lost the baby, when in actuality she took Moira's money and ran back to her hometown of Central City.

As you know, Central City is where Barry Allen/The Flash lives. What if this girl appears on the spinoff with a 6- or 7-year-old child? If she has a boy and names him Robert or Connor (Oliver's sons' names in the comic), we might lose it. How long will Oliver have to wait until he finds out he's a daddy? Kreisberg says, "This is something that will be paid off in season three."

So much happened last night! What did you think of the episode?
