Sure, we might have to wait until this fall for the Flash to return to the small screen — but it sounds like some of his friends will be back later this season on Arrow. Why?
S.T.A.R. Labs’ bioengineering expert Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker) and mechanical engineering genius Cisco (Carlos Valdes) will both be showing up later this season on Arrow in episode 19, essentially replacing what would’ve been Barry Allen’s (Grant Gustin) appearance in the backdoor pilot that was axed for a full-fledged Flash pilot episode.
So why have these two come to Starling City instead of Barry himself? Simple: He has to stay in a coma until his pilot episode airs in the fall. So enter the S.T.A.R. Labs duo. Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim wouldn’t spill exactly why they’ll be seeking the Arrow’s help, but he teased it’ll definitely be “an important appearance.” He also revealed that we will not be seeing Grant Gustin at all in this episode, due to the fact that he’d essentially be sitting around in a coma.
Here’s what Guggenheim had to say in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter promoting the two superhero shows:
"Even though the circumstances of that pitch changed, the idea of bringing in those characters really, really appealed to us because it allowed us to honor our original intention that we had at the beginning of the year, which was to do something Flash-related around episode 19 or 20 without of course having comatose Barry and basically paying Grant Gustin a lot of money to sit around with his eyes closed unconscious the whole episode. [That was] really boring.
It allows us to further flush out The Flash universe in Arrow. We get to see their dynamic. In fact, [filming at the same time as the Flash pilot] was an added producing/logistical complication. It's just so much fun to see these characters before you -- it's like previewing Boba Fett in the holiday special.”
The crossover episodes that introduced Barry Allen to the Arrow-verse were great, so we can’t wait to see more of Central City’s residents start making the trip. Arrow has taken a big step in establishing its own version of the DC universe, and Guggenheim seems genuinely invested in making it as cool as possible.
But the big question: What do you think will bring the S.T.A.R. Labs team to town?
