In addition to focusing on the small-screen version of the Suicide Squad, the latest episode of Arrow also snuck in a big cameo from the Batman universe.

Producer Marc Guggenheim conducted a wide-ranging chat with Collider and touched on that blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo from the Joker’s lady pal, Harley Quinn, locked up with the rest of the Suicide Squad deep inside A.R.G.U.S.

It’s a quick clip, and it finds the little blonde snarking about being a therapist from her cell. If her voice sounded familiar, it should, because the technically unnamed “Deranged Squad Female” character was played by Batman: Arkham videogame voice actor Tara Strong, who brings Harley to life in the hit series. Well played.

Here’s Guggenheim’s explanation, where he explains how surprised he was that fans latched onto the easter egg so quickly. Well, duh, Marc; that’s why we’re fans.

“For one thing, we didn’t expect it to end up in the promo, so we were caught a little off guard, on that front.  Andrew was very much like, ‘I totally knew people would lose their minds.’  And I was like, ‘Really?!’ I did not expect people to lose their minds the way they did, but I was very glad.  So, Andrew was a lot more prepared than I was…

I want to manage expectations with respect to Harley Quinn.  She was always intended to be an Easter egg.  I don’t want people to go in with incorrect expectations and walk away from Episode 16 disappointed.  But there is an element to the Easter egg that was not spoiled by the promo, that I think people will find a lot of fun.”

It was a great little nod to the larger DC-verse, and we hope they’re able to eventually revisit the character in the future. This also shows yet another nod to the Batman mythology, and it seems like maybe they’ve proven themselves enough to get a bit more rope when it comes to the DC archives.
