The CW’s Arrow doesn’t return for a few more weeks, but executive producer Wendy Mericle has opened up about where fans will find our heroes once the series resumes.
Mericle dropped a ton of intel to TV Line, touching on what several different characters will be doing this season. It sounds like Felicity is finally getting a meaty story all her own, as she'll be embracing her role as “full-blown CEO” (remember those papers Ray had her sign last season?). Laurel will also be “finding her place on the team,” while Thea will be trying to figure out how to balance her regular life with her nighttime superhero-ing.
As for the boys? It sounds like Diggle and Oliver might have a less-than-cheery reunion once they have to reunite to take on Damien Darhk. That’s compounded even more by the fact that Diggle will have a very personal stake in the H.I.V.E. storyline, as the shadowy agency is the one that ordered the hit on Dig’s deceased brother. Here’s how Mericle described the situation:
"One of the things we’re really excited about in the first half of the season is, how does Oliver win [Diggle] back? When they meet again at the top of Season 4, it is frosty. It is not good. In the past, Oliver would have been very defensive and maybe written Dig off or really defended his position. What’s interesting now is that he’s in a different place. He’s happy with Felicity. He’s more willing to say, 'Maybe I made some mistakes.' Their reconciliation, how they get there, is going to be a bumpy ride. It’s not going to be fully resolved.”
The big John Constantine (Matt Ryan) cameo also got a shout out from Mericle, as she teased the dabbler in the dark arts represents “somebody who has the ability to go into that other world and more or less find her.” The “her” in reference to the late Sara Lance (Caity Lotz). But, before Sara jumps ship to join up with the Legends of Tomorrow spinoff, she’ll have a complicated homecoming first. Mericle teased her father and sister will have “very different reactions” once they learn Sara is back from beyond the grave.
Arrow’s fourth season debuts October 7 on The CW.
