Arrowverse crossover titled 'Elseworlds'; will have ties to Crisis on Infinite Earths

This year’s annual Arrowverse crossover event was already riding high on news it’ll introduce Ruby Rose’s Batwoman to live action — but things just got a whole lot more interesting with some deep cut comic elements joining the fray.

Entertainment Weekly reports the crossover event will be titled “Elseworlds,” a reference to the DC Comics imprint that tells “What if?” type stories, such as the period-set Gotham By Gaslight story that sent Batman on a search for Jack the Ripper. This opens up some major questions, most notably exactly where this event will fit within the ever-complicated, shared continuity between all these shows.

The Monitor DC Comics

The network also confirmed, via Deadline, that LaMonica Garrett (Designated Survivor) has been cast as the deep cut character The Monitor — a cosmic player in DC Comics’ monumental Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline the publisher used to retool and smooth out its convoluted multiverse set-up. He’s described as an “extraterrestrial being of infinite power,” so it seems the small screen Justice League will be teaming up to possibly stop a threat to the multiverse itself.

With the series using the “Elseworlds” title, it opens up a bevy of options as to exactly what the creative team wants to pull off. And the presence of The Monitor certainly implies the multiverse itself (already a key element established over the past few years on The Flash) could be getting a revamp. We know Batwoman will feature into the story, and by extension Gotham City, but could we also be jumping around the multiverse to different versions of the locales we know and love? If nothing else, it’d certainly be a nice creative cheat to play around with elements of Gotham City without actually establishing some deeper Batman canon within the Arrowverse proper, right?

The three-night crossover event will run from Sunday, December 9 through Tuesday, December 11. It’ll encompass characters from The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl. Along with key cast members, the event will also features guest stars Tyler Hoechlin (Superman) and Elizabeth Tulloch (Lois Lane). Of note: The time-time-traveling super-team Legends of Tomorrow will seemingly be sitting out this crossover event (along with fellow DC solo series Black Lightning, though its place in the multiverse has remained nebulous up to this point, anyway).
