When Arthur Darvill was cast as time-traveling rogue Time Master Rick Hunter on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, a lot of comparisons to Doctor Who -- a show he previously starred on -- were made.
Darvill starred on the BBC sci-fi series from 2010 to 2012 as Rory Williams, a companion to Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor and Amy Pond’s (Karen Gillan) husband. As such, Darvill got to travel through time and space aboard a ship called the TARDIS that the Doctor, a Time Lord, stole from his home planet of Gallifrey as he ran away.
Now starring on The CW's comic-book series Legends of Tomorrow, Darvill plays a time-traveling Time Master who also steals a time-traveling ship (the Waverider, although this ship doesn't have the ability to travel to space) in order to recruit a team of superheroes and villains to take down Big Bad villain Vandal Savage (Casper Crump). Essentially, Arthur Darvill became the Doctor.
So, how did the actor feel about coming on board a series that featured lots of time travel after starring in a show that also featured time travel? Similarities much? Here’s what Arthur Darvill told IGN:
“When they pitched this idea to me, I think I was more concerned that it would be too similar to Doctor Who. One of the reasons I wanted to do it was, for me, as a character, Rip Hunter is so different from anything I've ever done before. He's so front-footed and leads the team. This is my chance to be a bit of a hero, which I think -- my eight-year-old self is going absolutely nuts.
I suppose there are similarities, but I was worried -- because we didn't have a script or anything when it was pitched -- "Is it going to be too similar?" Then I got the script and was like, "Oh, thank God, it's wildly different." So yeah, I think there are obviously similarities. I'm an Englishman in a long coat who time travels, but I think that's where the similarities end, actually. I'm really enjoying finding out who this person is. He's very complicated and has a strange moral compass. Yeah, I'm not quite sure if he's trustworthy. [Laughs]”
Having seen the first episode of Legends of Tomorrow last week, do you agree with Arthur Darvill that there are enough differences between the character of Time Master Rip Hunter and that of the Doctor on Doctor Who?
