Geek galaxies collide in a cosmic crossover for the ages in IDW's new Star Trek vs. Transformers series, and SYFY WIRE has an exclusive chat with artist Philip Murphy and a first peek inside the pages of this perfect pairing of beloved sci-fi properties.
Two of IDW Publishing's most desirable licensed franchises finally meet in this fantastic four-issue rendezvous written by Transformers veteran John Barber and Star Trek scribe Mike Johnson, and matched with arresting art by Murphy (The Powerpuff Girls, Star Wars Adventures).
The storyline, which combines the TV cartoon universes of 1973's Star Trek: The Animated Series and 1984's The Transformers, finds the USS Enterprise near the Klingon Empire and called on to investigate a strange disturbance at a remote dilithium mine on Cygnus Seven. When a landing party is beamed down to the surface, they discover swarms of self-flying Transformer jets and helicopters buzzing the compound. The Enterprise crew must contend with these shape-shifting robots of Cybertron and receive aid from a familiar flat-nosed semi truck that rolls in to save the day from this Autobot and Decepticon clash.
"Star Trek vs. The Transformers is definitely one of the best projects that I have ever worked on -- it is a love letter to fans of both Star Trek and Transformers," artist Philip Murphy told SYFY WIRE. "Digging into the lore of each animated series and mixing it together into a shared universe has been just amazing, and it absolutely feels like a lost season from both shows.
"Before we started the project, we wanted to make sure that we stayed as close as possible to the retro style of both the animated Star Trek and G1 Transformers to make each panel feel like it was a shot taken from the shows, so researching and getting the style as close as possible was the top priority to me," Murphy added. "Fans may even spot some references if they look close enough! The series is definitely a more than meets the eye adventure to a place where no one has gone before and I can't wait for fans and newcomers to beam up and roll out!"
