If you're a regular on the comic book convention circuit, there's a good chance that you've seen the artwork of Daniel Govar. While Govar has provided cover illustrations for Grimm, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, Wolverine, Ant-Man, and more, he also hits nearly a dozen conventions during the year where he wows fans with his command of multiple mediums. And yet to hear Govar tell the story, he owes his career in comics to a bet.
"I know it sounds terrible, but somebody bet me that I couldn't win a contest that DC Comics had," said Govar while participating in our latest Artists Alley showcase video. "It was kind of like American Idol for comics. It was called Zuda, and you [submitted] eight pages of a comic that you want to do to the publisher, and they put it up on the website and people vote on their favorite comic. It's one of ten comics, and mine just happened to be the one that won. But a friend sent me the link as a bet saying 'I bet you can't win this.' A bet got me in."
The comic in question was Azure, and it ran for "two seasons" on Zuda, before Govar went on to original titles including Relaunch and Lovecraft. Govar also briefly spoke with us about his new children's book, Mr. Trunks Builds a Wall.
Throughout the video, Govar put his skills to use while creating a pinup of an android. Govar explained some of his techniques and the color theories behind them as he came up with a history and a personality for his new creation through each creative choice he made.
