Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is shaping up to be the most epic installment yet of the long-running Assassin's Creed video game series. The new entry has received a ton of buzz for taking the franchise to new heights, with changes such as allowing players to choose a male or female character for the first time.
But if fresh narratives, romances, and exciting new core fighting mechanics weren’t enough, it’s been revealed by Variety writer Brian Crecente that the game will also contain a vicious new enemy in the shape of sharks that you can actually wage battle against.
Crecente posted a YouTube video of his own gameplay ahead of E3, showing a scene of the male character Alexios trying to defeat the giant fish, with no such luck.
Sharks are not exactly new to the franchise itself, but it appears to be the first time you are able to take them on in a proper under water tussle with your chosen weapon, as opposed to harpooning them from ashore. Judging by the footage however, it doesn’t seem to be the easiest of duels we've seen in the games (but then again, it probably shouldn't be).
Sharks always pose some impending doom in video games (and in life) and are usually objects that players desperately try to avoid when trying to reach a particular destination, rather than attacking them head on. There were some gnarly looking ones in 2013's Tomb Raider: Underworld, and while the sharks in Resident Evil were always terrifying, they never actually made a move on you.
Our personal favorite would have to be Johnny, the robotic shark equipped with a torpedo for a headpiece, as seen in Sonic Rush Adventure (as you can see at about the 12:30 mark in the video below). Now that's one aquatic beast we wouldn't want to mess with.
Assassin's Creed: Odyssey is due out Oct. 5 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One, so you'd better sharpen your shark fighting skills.
