Fans of the videogame series Assassin’s Creed have been excited about the upcoming movie since it was announced in 2011. And we’ve known for a few days that the movie will follow the basic plot of the game. But is there anything else to learn?
Assassin’s Creed head of content Azaïzia Aymar recently spoke on Twitter about what to expect when we’re very much expecting to see our protagonist stab a baddie in the back:
Depending on the game, Assassin’s Creed takes place different times and places in history, such as the Crusades or the American Revolutionary War. At the same time, it’s set in the modern world, thanks to the power of the Animus (a device that allows you to live the life of your ancestor through your genetic memories).
This means star Michael Fassbender will play two characters: modern-day Callum Lynch, “and Aguilar will be his ancestor in the past,” tweeted Aymar. So we won’t be spending time with Altair, Ezio or Connor, but Aymar said, “It’s possible you may find some familiar faces.”
According to Aymar, “We share the same universe. Elements of the film have consequences, as in our games, comics, and books.”
But that doesn’t mean viewers need to put in several hours of game time before hitting the theater: Aymar tweeted that the biggest challenge of the screenplay was “Trying not to overwhelm fans or newcomers w/ tons of references. The focus was on crafting an elegant story!”
Aymar neither confirmed nor denied the existence of the assassins and their nemeses, the Templars, except to say, “We may have surprises for you!”
But a movie called Assassin’s Creed without assassins or Templars seems like a misstep — and our protagonist is always sure-footed. After all, it’s in his genetic makeup.
