It was on this day in 1980 that Chris Whitelaw Pine entered this world. Get pumped, people.

Born in Los Angeles, Pine's family have been show folk for generations. He went to UC Berkeley, he was an apprentice at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and he studied at ACT in San Francisco.

And now he's Captain Kirk and Jack Ryan.

Also Steve Trevor.

It was also on this day in 1953 that The War of the Worlds premiered.

Based on the H.G. Wells book and directed by Byron Haskin, the film starred Gene Barry and Ann Robinson. It won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

It was re-made with Tom Cruise in 2005. But the less said about that the better.

Tomorrow: "What does it all mean, Pee-wee?"
