August 30 in Sci-Fi History: Happy Birthday to Peggy Lipton, Cameron Diaz and Mary Shelley

Before you do anything else today, you should reach out on Twitter and wish a happy birthday to Peggy Lipton, who was born on this day in sci-fi history.

Lipton was born in New York in 1946. She attended the Professional Children's School and became an actress pretty early. Her breakout role on The Mod Squad won her a Golden Globe in 1970, but she's also known for her role as Norma Jennings on Twin Peaks.

Also today in sci-fi history, Frankenstein author Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley was born in 1797. Years later, while on vacation and telling ghost stories with the likes of Lord Byron and Claire Clairmont, she was overcome and terrified by a vision of a reanimated corpse. And what came of that? Frankenstein.

Uhm. We sort of love this:

Elle Fanning is playing Mary Shelley in the upcoming biopic Mary Shelley. Of course she is.

And finally, happy birthday to Cameron Diaz! Her sci-fi credits include A Life Less Ordinary (1997), Being John Malkovich (1999), Vanilla Sky (2001), The Box (2009), and The Green Hornet (2011); she also provided the voice of Fiona in all the Shrek movies.

But to us, she'll always be Tina Carlyle ...

Tomorrow: Chris Tucker and Thomas Edison.
