August 9 in Sci-Fi History: The Abyss

It's a movie you will always watch when it comes on TV, and also you will probably hold your breath for parts of it.

On this day in 1989, The Abyss premiered.

Again, trailers were weird in the '80s.

Directed by James Cameron, the movie didn't do great at the box office, but audiences loved it. Famously, the cast had an incredibly difficult time making the movie. Ed Harris refuses to talk about it to this day, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio famously said, "The Abyss was a lot of things. Fun to make was not one of them."

This scene, though:

Other premieres on this day: Escape From L.A. premiered in 1996. And this trailer is kind of amazing.

And, on this day in 2013, Elysium premiered. It … more or less looks like a realistic future lately, no?

Elysium didn't do great numbers at the box office, either ... but on second watching, we have to say, it's not as bad as we had remembered. Worth a second look.

Tomorrow: Jack Haley.
