Tonight at the E! People's Choice Awards once again proved that genre has its hooks in the collective imagination of the public. From the TV shows like Wynonna Earp and Shadowhunters to blockbuster heavyweights like Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War all beat out the competition in accordance with fans' votes.

On the small screen, Wynonna Earp took home the prize for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show of 2018. Shadowhunters also did well, thanks to their newly-named fanbase, the Shadowfam. The show also won Show of 2018, Male TV Star of 2018 for actor Harry Shum, Jr. and Female TV Star of 2018 for Katherine McNamara.

"Shadowhunters is a story of unlikely heroes who form an alliance in divided worlds. It has been a real privilege to watch you, the fandom, do the same, to create a community of love and acceptance in our divided world," McNamara said while accepting Female TV Star.

Most of those awards owe an extra thanks to the Shadowfam, as the show was initially only nominated for Show of 2018, but picked up an additional four nominations thanks to a vocal write-in campaign.

On the big screen, Black Panther earned enough fan votes to get Chadwick Boseman the award for Movie Actor of 2018. Danai Gurira also won for Action Star of 2018 -- the lone female nominee alongside four males, including her Black Panther co-star. "Thank you for affirming that women and girls, when they are given the chance to hang with the boys, can hang with the best of them," Gurira said in her acceptance speech.

Scarlett Johannson also took home Female Movie Star of 2018 for her role of Black Widow in Infinity War. Marvel's mega-crossover also took home Action Movie of 2018, beating out Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Deadpool 2 and Black Panther

The big prize, however, was the Movie of 2018. While there were five nominees in total, it was a dead heat between Infinity War and Black Panther, as voting continued throughout the bulk of the telecast.

In the end, it was Infinity War that won out, though Marvel Studios being behind the night's two big finalists speaks volumes about the ever-growing popularity of the MCU as it moves forward into its 11th year of dominating both the box office and our collective imagination.

After taking the stage, Gurira dedicated the award to the Los Angeles fire departments, who are currently fighting off the Woolsey Fire, one of the most destructive fires the state has seen in years.
