Aykroyd on Ghostbusters 3: Don't believe the Bill Murray rumors

Oh, Ghostbusters 3. Has there been a proposed sequel that has been more of a lightning rod for rumor, speculation and straight-up enmity, especially among its creative players? Most recently, it slipped that Bill Murray out-and-out hated Dan Aykroyd's latest draft of the script. Well, the Blues Brother wants to clear that up.

If you'll remember, rumor had it that after reading the latest draft of Ghostbusters 3, Murray sent it back to Aykroyd and Harold Ramis after having run it through a shredder, complete with a note that read "No one wants to pay money to see fat, old men chasing ghosts!" In his defense, Aykroyd denies that the shredding ever happened:

"Bill Murray is not capable of such behaviour. This is simply something that would not be in his nature. We have a deep, private personal relationship that transcends business. We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in Ghostbusters 3 has been made clear and I respect that. But Bill has too much positive estimation of my writing skills to shred the work."

But Britain's Empire magazine points out that, despite this "deep, private personal relationship," Aykroyd has hinted that the producers might replace Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman and bring another actor in, much as when Paramount brought in Harrison Ford to replace Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan. But one actor they don't want to ditch is Rick Moranis:

"If we can get the script to Ghostbusters 3 right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant."

Still, Aykroyd points out they've got a good long while before any of that that happens:

"The script must be perfect. We cannot release a film that is any less than that. We have more work to do."

I'm trying to imagine a way that this doesn't all spell disaster, a path that would lead us to a place where making Ghostbusters 3 isn't a horrible idea ... and I'm failing.

Do you have faith that Ghostbusters 3 will be any good?
