The web is becoming a brave new world for sci-fi, and now Netflix has picked up its second genre series with some major talent behind it.
J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) has partnered with the Wachowskis (The Matrix trilogy) to create the new Netflix sci-fi series Sense8, which is described as “a gripping global tale of minds linked and souls hunted.”
The project has received a 10-episode order from Netflix Instant and is the online video service’s second sci-fi-ish series following Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove. Throw in the fact that Amazon is developing a Zombieland series and it looks like the web could have some solid options next fall.
Straczynski is a proven TV commodity from the Babylon 5 days, and also produced the solid but short-lived sci-fi series Jeremiah. Though the Wachowskis have never tried their hands at the TV format, there’s no denying they have a great eye for epic sci-fi. From The Matrix to Cloud Atlas, the duo have a way of making a big idea work in an exciting way.
It’ll definitely be interesting to see how the two combine forces, and this is one project to keep an eye out for in 2014.
Have you missed having Straczynski on the small screen all these years?
