The time travel series 12 Monkeys has never been afraid to have a little fun with its casting, and the cult hit is going back to the future (literally) with its latest addition.

Award-winning actor Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future franchise) has been cast in a guest role in Season 3 of the Syfy (Corporate owner of Blastr -Ed) series. Lloyd is signed on to play the character Zalmon Shaw, described as a “charming but deadly cult leader who preys upon other’s tragedies and losses in order to recruit new members into the apocalyptic cult the Army of the 12 Monkeys.”  Shaw will be revealed as the father of the Pallid Man, a powerful baddie who has wreaked havoc on Cole and Cassie for most of the series.

According to the network, the third season follows Cole and Cassie as they embark on a desperate search across time to find the man responsible for the apocalypse (aka The Witness). Killing the Witness will mean saving the world, but anyone who saw the Season 2 finale knows that’s not quite as easy as it sounds (The Witness is “safe,” indeed). In Season 3, the team will call into question new alliances, old bonds, and the virtue of the mission itself. What started as a cut-and-dried story about saving the world has gotten a whole lot more complicated the past couple of years, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

The 10-episode third season of 12 Monkeys is set to premiere on Syfy in 2017. The premiere will be directed by series co-creator and showrunner Terry Matalas, who will be making his directorial debut.
