The end of Game of Thrones is coming, as is the final reckoning for all of your favorite (and least favorite) denizens of Westeros. Will Hot Pie finally win Cupcake Wars? Will Bran stop talking like a riddling Batman villain? Will Samwell and his bedpans be reunited? Who, if anyone, will take the Iron Throne in the end?
We do not know the answers to any of these questions, as the series has now blasted far beyond the original books by George R.R. Martin that actually exist. Not only that, the producers of Thrones have gone to extraordinary lengths to secure the secrets of the final season, doing their best to make sure that the surprises in store crush us harder than the Mountain crushes heads.
Despite all of the secrecy about the new season, one Thrones actor has confirmed that his character will not appear at all in Season 8.
**SPOILER WARNING: Spoilers for the final season of Game of Thrones below!**
If you do not wish to be spoiled, then consider this a solid, magical wall of ice— no amount of dragon fire will breach it. Run south, and run as fast as you can. Spoilers will begin after the jump.
It would seem that the Iron Bank of Braavos may be closed for good— at the very least, it may not play all that big a part in the final season.
In a recent interview with ShortList, actor Mark Gatiss, who plays Iron Banker Tycho Nestoris, has revealed that he is not involved in the epic close of the show. When asked about it, the Sherlock actor/writer said, "I’m not in it, so I guess I survive. Although they might just mention offhand that I’ve had my head bitten off by a dragon off-screen or something."
Nestoris is a minor character, and has mostly served his purpose by supplying Cersei Lannister with the gold she needed to deal with the armies of Daenerys Stormborn, the rightful Queen of Westeros. Still, it's surprising that the army of publicists working on Thrones let this get out— Mycroft Holmes might be very good at keeping secrets, but it would appear that Mark Gatiss is more of an open vault.
Gatiss' Nestoris is the main character through which the rest of the cast has dealt with the Iron Bank, so if he's not around, it could stand to reason that the Bravossi institution will not be a major player from this point forward. We understand — there are still a huge amount of factions and characters to deal with, and though Season 7 killed off characters left and right (Sand Snake dirt naps, etc) there are still a good amount of players on the board.
While Gatiss' time with Thrones may be over, he does mention Sherlock in the same interview, saying that the series might not be over for good. As he says, "We’d like to do more, but it’s very tough to schedule because of everyone’s availability. It has to be the right time."
We'll miss Tycho Nestoris and his fabulous ruffled collars, but here's hoping we haven't seen the last of Mycroft and his umbrella collection... or the town of Royston Vasey, for that matter.
