What’s up, geneticist? EGOT legend Barbra Streisand has some answers. Apparently, in addition to singing, acting, directing, and producing, America’s favorite multihyphenate has been bringing the country into the future, one dog at a time.
In conversation with Variety, Barbra Streisand brought up the fact that her dogs were actually clones of a beloved former pet. Cotons de Tuléar Miss Violet and Miss Scarlett, which aren’t very Blade Runner-esque names, came from the original cells of 14-year-old Samantha.
Here’s a video of them being adorable futuristic fuzzballs:
Before the Samantha died, in 2007, Streisand had cells collected from the dog’s mouth and stomach so that genetic replicas could be made. However, as with all cloning stories, there have been differences.
“They have different personalities,” Streisand said. “I’m waiting for them to get older so I can see if they have Samantha’s brown eyes and seriousness.”
After the clones arrived, Streisand dressed the identical pups in red and purple for identification purposes, which also gave them their colorful names. No report as of yet whether the dogs have decided to strike out on their own to find the truth about their creation in some sort of space opera or complex sisterly quest.
