Titans famously introduced itself to the world with a trailer in which Dick Grayson denounced Batman. Now, that tension is coming to a head in the season finale of DC Universe's first original series.
When Dick Grayson growled "F--- Batman" in the Titans trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, it was a widely spoofed but also closely analyzed moment, as fans wondered what had happened to push this version of Robin to the point of such hatred toward his mentor figure. Well, Batman has arrived in the Titans Season 1 finale, and it's pretty clear why now: This Batman is darker than any other live-action version of the character we've ever seen.
In the trailer for the finale, Jason Todd (Curran Walters) shows up to let Dick (Brenton Thwaites) know that Batman has finally gone too far. With Commissioner Gordon out of action, the Dark Knight is preparing to rid the world of Gotham's supervillains once and for all, and Dick might be the only person standing in the way of a full-on massacre. The footage then teases the bloodbath ahead with the bodies of some very familiar supervillains. Check it out.
In past incarnations of the Batman and Robin story, Dick Grayson was Batman's greatest success, proof that there was indeed hope and that people could indeed recover from tragedy, while Jason Todd was the cautionary tale of darkness and anger. In the version presented by Titans, Batman himself may be the cautionary tale, always pushing deeper into the darkness while his original Robin is always resisting it. It's an interesting spin on the dynamic between these characters, and it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out.
The season finale of Titans arrives December 21 on DC Universe.
