Batman: The Animated Series came along at exactly the right time for me. I was young enough to be instantly sucked into the cartoon world without question, yet old enough to appreciate the high quality of the art and the sophistication of the storytelling and voice acting. All these years later, it remains my favorite piece of Batman media outside of certain comics, and I'm pretty sure the one-two punch of Batman and Animaniacs in the hour after I got home from school each day made me the weirdo I am.
Next month, The LEGO Batman Movie will win over a new generation of kids with its candy-colored action and comedic take on the Caped Crusader's self-seriousness, and for some of these kids there will never be another Batman they love more. I love the idea that two different generations will have an animated Batman they can adore ... but there's also no reason we can't bring the two together.
Animators Kyle Roberts and Nathan Poppe have made a habit of crafting re-creations of their favorite '90s cartoon openings, and since LEGO Batman's release is right around the corner, they decided to give the classic Animated Series opening sequence a stop-motion makeover with the addition of LEGOs for good measure. Check it out.
Yeah, maybe it loses something without that iconic score, but it's still very lovingly crafted ... and makes me want to play Batman with my old action figures right now.
The LEGO Batman Movie opens February 10.
