Now, I cannot draw a stick figure to save my life or play a harmless game of Hangman, but I do know stunning Star Wars concept art dripping with remarkable creativity when I see it.
This year, Industrial Light & Magic partnered with ArtStation to launch a global contest asking concept artists, both amateur and professional, around the planet to reimagine key scenarios, vehicles, battles, droids, locations and characters from the existing Star Wars universe. The ILM Art Department Challenge put nearly 4,000 artists from 101 countries through a rigorous creative bootcamp that required hopeful entrants to work through a series of weekly challenges meant to weed out the posers from the contenders, with the Grand Prize being the once-in-a-lifetime chance to be handed a job as an official artist within the legendary ILM Art Department.
After weeding out all but 224 contestants, the remaining Picassos put their pens, pastels and paintbrushes to the test in a final phase that simulated the real-life working conditions of a multi-phase art project, with its hectic web of deadlines, changing directives and high-pressure environment. Three ultimate winners, Mario Alberti, Morgan Yon and Fred Palacio, were chosen from this elite group and will now be offered gainful employment inside the "Galactic Dream Factory That George Built."
Marvel at these spectacular concept art images of the three deserving victors and many ILM favorites and honorable mentions in the gallery below and tell us which ones take the prize for you.
