While we know Ben Affleck is currently hard at work with Geoff Johns on their upcoming Batman solo film, we still don’t know much about the storyline the dynamic duo will use for the superhero movie.
When Affleck was busy promoting Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice back in March, the actor was asked if he would be using stories such Batman: The Killing Joke (which has just been adapted as an R-rated animated film with Mark Hamill as the Joker) or Red Hood for the new Batman movie. Affleck said he would do an original story but that he would *ahem* borrow the great stuff from the comics.
Here’s what he told Cines Argentinos:
“I think what I would do, what I probably would do, is in some ways what Zack did with this movie, which is to borrow certain things from the great comic books, but create an original story around it because I wouldn't want the fans to already know the story and be familiar, but I would borrow, steal, great things that have been done before in the comics.”
Now, remember that this interview was conducted before it became official that Affleck was actually co-writing, directing and starring in the new Batman film, tentatively called The Batman. So the question was asked as a hypothetical. But since we know Affleck was indeed not-so-secretly working on the movie at the time (there had been rumors), his answer may offer some clues as to how he plans to create a new Batman story.
All in all, it'll be intriguing to see what original storyline Affleck and Johns will come up with, and which “great things” they’ll plunder from the comics in order to whip that up. As long as it's done better than what Zack Snyder did in Batman v Superman.
What say you? Ben Affleck will return as the Caped Crusader in Suicide Squad, out in movie theaters Aug. 5.
