The rumor mill has been churning about how an upcoming Marvel one-shot might undo one of Iron Man 3’s biggest twists — and now the film’s writer and star Ben Kingsley have chimed in.
Spoilers ahead for Iron Man 3!
As we know by now, Iron Man 3 pulled the ultimate fake-out with the big baddie the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) — essentially turning the character into a puppet who is used by the real baddie, Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), to incite fear in the masses.
Fans were divided on the twist, and when word broke that Kingsley is working with Marvel again on a one-shot, early reports indicated that the short might undo the twist in some way and introduce a real, badass Mandarin, who is upset about how he was represented in the plot of Iron Man 3.
When asked about it by Vanity Fair, Kingsley said he believes everyone involved stands behind the twist:
“Marvel was so brilliant in the way they kept the transition from the Mandarin to Trevor Slattery in Iron Man 3. They were absolutely brilliant at it. I so respect the way they dearly want to surprise their audiences. But we will just have to leave [the Mandarin theory] in the realm of rumor.”
The film’s screenwriter, Drew Pearce, also chimed in on reports that Marvel was looking for a way to undo the Mandarin fake-out. According to him, Marvel is extremely proud of the twist — so don’t expect them to retcon it anytime soon:
“One thing I know for sure: nobody's going to be apologizing for the Mandarin twist any time soon.”
So, if this isn’t what Kingsley’s one-shot is about, then we may have to go back to the drawing board. Marvel has been pushing the boundaries with the one-shots these days, so the options are seriously limitless. What do you think they’re doing?
