They may not share networks, but The Flash and Supergirl do share a good bit of the same creative team behind the scenes. So, will we ever see the two DC properties cross over?
While speaking at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, producer Greg Berlanti said they have obviously thought about bringing Supergirl into the same universe as Arrow and The Flash, though there’s nothing official to report at this time. It wouldn’t be easy, obviously, but they’ve already crossed over with the now-canceled Constantine (R.I.P.) from NBC, so putting this one together isn’t too far-fetched.
Here’s an excerpt from his comments via TV Line:
“Unfortunately, you’re going to get the same answer that I always give, which is that, as a fan, I would love it. I personally never rule anything out. I would be excited by it. But a lot of things would have to go right, people would have to say yes, for that to happen. It would have to be figured out in the next month or so [to make it into Season 1 of Supergirl].”
Along with the obvious financial and studio hurdles, Berlanti noted that the idea would also create some major creative issues that would need to be addressed. Namely: It’d mean introducing Superman a part of the Arrow and Flash-verse. He admitted they would “have to figure out a way around that,” though they already have “some thoughts” on how to solve that problem.
What’s interesting is the fact that behind-the-scenes buzz when Supergirl was picked up for a full season indicated a crossover with Flash could be a part of the equation to close the deal, though it seems that apparently might not be the case (or the deal went cold for some reason). Or perhaps they’re playing things close to the vest until they lock down all the details for an official confirmation.
Though the DC geek in us would love to see all these characters in the same world, you most definitely open yourself up to some creative issues when you actually try to do it. It comes down to everyone involved asking the big question of whether that move would be worth the creative repercussions in the long run (which is a topic we've discussed at length before).
What do you think? Would you like to see Supergirl enter the Arrow-verse?
