Proving that he's nothing if not persistent, Luc Besson has taken his lumps over Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets and he's going back to what he knows works for him: kickass female action movies.
As Screen Rant points out, during the recent EuropaCorp shareholder meeting, CEO Marc Shmuger told Variety the studio's next production will be a sequel to Lucy and that Besson's already written the script. Additionally, the trade reports that the company is adjusting its strategy after the $135 million dollar loss from Valerian and plans to release more thrillers and action movies with a couple of English-language movies and two French movies per year, all with lower budgets.
Besson is a co-founder of EuropaCorp, so his interests in this venture are financial as well as creative. Given the ending of Lucy, it's hard to see how he can do a sequel, but the first Lucy was a box office hit, so Besson's hoping to catch the magic again.
No word yet on whether Scarlett Johannson will return — and we remain hopeful for the God-like Morgan Freeman in some capacity. There's no such thing as too much Morgan Freeman.
